A wander down memory lane

History around every twist and turn. You’re now standing in Turnpin Lane, one of the South entrances to the market. Did You Know, Turnpin Lane is one of the oldest streets in Greenwich? The narrow lane dates back to at least the 17th century, and possibly earlier.

Its name likely refers to the old term “turnpike”, a gate or barrier on a road. Suggesting it may once have had a toll or gate to control access to the area. It’s been a well-trodden shortcut for centuries, squeezed between ancient buildings that have seen the area evolve from rural village to buzzing London borough.

It's time to share the love

Can you find Turnpin Lane’s iconic heart? Turnpin Lane is recognisable from its huge iconic heart, hanging from the archway. Throw up your hand hearts and capture your best selfie with the heart and share with us @GreenwichMarket
